Think Local Act Personal (TLAP) and the National Co-production Advisory Group (NCAG) are working with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to define what good leadership looks like in health and social care. This work will help shape how good leadership is defined and will inform the way CQC assesses well-led.

Why this work is important
Good leadership is essential for making personalised care a reality. Making It Real describes what good care and support should look like, but good leadership is needed to ensure it happens.
This project is working to define the leadership qualities and behaviours that help create care and support that truly works for people. Working in co-production, it will ensure that leadership in health and social care is shaped by the voices of people who draw on it, as well as the people who work in it.
The ideas and insights gathered will help shape how good leadership is defined and will inform the way CQC assesses leadership under the key question of well-led in the assessment framework.
How the project is working
We are working closely with a range of people to explore good leadership. This includes people who draw on care and support, people who work directly with people who draw on care and support, and leaders across health and social care.
By working with a range of people we are gaining valuable insights into what good leadership looks like and how it can make care and support more personalised.
This project has involved a series of workshops, discussion, and co-production sessions where people can share their experiences and ideas.
Since the CQC regulates both social care and health care, this project takes a holistic approach by looking at leadership across the full spectrum of care and support.
What we hope to achieve
This project aims to:
- Identify the behaviours and actions that define good leadership in health and social care.
- Develop a practical resource that outlines these behaviours to guide effective leadership.
- Influence how CQC assesses leadership in health and social care by sharing our findings that will reflect people’s real experiences.
