Personalising dementia support: building a strategy on lived experience

Published: 22 Oct, 2024

Think Local Act Personal hosts the Dementia Change Action Network (DCAN). DCAN harnesses the power of networks to tackle key challenges for people living with dementia, together. We are currently developing a new strategy for DCAN, built on insights from people’s lived experiences of dementia.

How has this work come about?

DCAN has undertaken a number of projects to progress personalisation for people with dementia since being established in 2020. Four years later, we are preparing to move into a new strategic period. In line with our values, we will be developing our new strategy based on ideas and insight from people with dementia and carers.

Why is this work important?

There is still much that can be done to support people with dementia to live their life their way. Building on the insights and ideas of people living with dementia and carers is the best way to make sure that DCAN’s future strategy makes a positive difference in people’s lives.

What are we doing?

The process of turning lived experience into strategy will include a number of stages.

  • Work with an oversight group to manage the project including people living with dementia, and professionals working in dementia care, support and policy development.
  • Facilitation of conversations across the country, capturing people’s thoughts and experiences through our conversation guide.
  • Hosting of online and in-person conversations with people with dementia and their families to understand people’s experiences, aspirations and ideas and to co-create policy recommendations.

This project will be led by TLAP Associates Liz Leach-Murphy and Neil Crowther.
