Learning from experience to better support people preparing for adulthood

Published: 16 Sep, 2024

We’re exploring how to better support young people who are preparing for adulthood. By gathering stories and best practices from people with lived experience and Local Authorities, we aim to understand what matters most to people during this time.

Throughout October, we’ll be gathering stories and best practices from Local Authorities and people with lived experience to see what’s working, what’s not, and what matters most to young people at this critical time. We’re especially keen to hear and learn from people who have been through this themselves and to explore the information and advice they receive about self-directed support and how it can enable them to have more choice and control over their care.

Why this work is important

Young people preparing for adulthood are a crucial, yet often overlooked group. Every year, they make up a significant part of people who draw on adult social care, and their needs are unique. By understanding people’s experiences, we can identify gaps and improve the support available.

Our objectives

We want to uncover what’s missing for young people and their families when it comes to planning for the future. This includes looking at the information and support available to help them take control of their care and make informed decisions.

The outcomes

Here’s what we’re hoping to achieve:

  • A desktop review of current resources and information available across England
  • Gathering of best practice examples/interviews/case studies from Local Authority perspective
  • Gathering of personal stories from people with lived experience
  • Co-production of online survey to gather more insights
  • A report sharing everything we’ve learnt

How you can get involved

People who work at a Local Authority:

  • Share written examples of how you support people preparing for adulthood, through your team structure, processes, approaches, and resources
  • Share written case studies
  • Attend a one to one video call to answer some questions about your work

If you work for a local authority and would like to share your experience, please complete this short form.

People with lived experience:

  • Attend an online workshop to share your experience of preparing people for adulthood and co-produce an online survey to collect more stories
  • Share your experience on a one to one video call
  • Share your experience by email

If you have lived experience and would like to share your story, please complete this short form. You will be paid £21.63 per hour for attending an online workshop or video call, in line with our co-production pay rate.

Provisional dates for the online workshops are:
