The Ageing Well programme provides sector-led support to local authorities to promote the independence and wellbeing of older people. Local Government Improvement and Development delivers the programme, which is free to local authorities at the point of use.
The Ageing Well programme has four main themes:
- Leadership
- Strategic approach
- Engagement of older people
- Joined-up / co-ordinated commissioning and delivery of services for older people.
The programme works with local authorities on a number of key activities:-
- supporting local political and managerial leadership
- involving older people and communities in discussions about priorities and opportunities for improving their wellbeing
- adopting more strategic approaches to prevention and early intervention
- maximising efficiencies and effectiveness through joined-up and ‘place-based’ approaches
- developing local solutions to delivering “A good place to grow older.”
The Ageing Well Programme has three main components:-
- it helps councils diagnose what areas of their work they need to prioritise for attention
- it provides a menu of improvement products and opportunities
- it collects and disseminates a wide range of information and good practice.
Taken together, these components combine to provide a tailored programme of support with a particular emphasis on place-based approaches, building social capital and addressing the new public health agenda for older people.
