Definition
A service or support that gives unpaid carers and the people they support a break. Respite care can mean a few hours during the day or evening, or overnight, or a longer-term break.
The bigger picture
The dictionary definition of respite is “a pause or rest from something difficult or unpleasant”. This stigmatises the person drawing on support as well as suggesting the break is just for the carer rather than for everyone.
Saying it differently
A ‘break’ or ‘short breaks’ are widely used alternative. However there is some concern that changing the language from ‘respite’ to ‘short breaks’ has led to the perception that breaks are a ‘nice to have’, rather than an essential element of any healthy relationship.
What people say
“Respite.. I would say to anybody get the dictionary and look at the meaning of respite. It is a horrible definition. Getting away from something unpleasant basically. And actually when we talk about short breaks rather than respite, what we mean is having enough time to go and look after yourself. Not being away from the person you love because they’re unpleasant. Being away from the person you love and care for because you need that rest and time to just nurture yourself.” – Isaac Samuels
