Resilience

Definition

A person’s ability to cope and to recover quickly from, or adapt to, difficult or damaging situations or experiences.

The bigger picture

‘Creating resilient individuals’ or increasing people’s resilience is often stated as one of the aims of strengths-based practice. However there is a danger that this emphasis on resilience can put too much pressure on people to cope, or ‘bounce back’, rather than looking at attitudes, environments and structural inequalities that are causing harm, and focusing on creating more compassionate, welcoming and inclusive environments.
