Definition
A group of people with a shared characteristic. Cohorts include older people, people with a physical impairment, people with a learning disability, people with mental health challenges, and so on.
The bigger picture
This term can imply everyone in a group is the same, removing people’s unique identity and meaning assumptions and judgements might be made about a person because they’re in a particular group.
Saying it differently
The term ‘cohort’ is often used in reports about people. Where possible, it’s good to find an alternative term to use instead, like ‘group of people’.
