Today, I want to shine a light on two outstanding women whose dedication, leadership, and compassion have made a lasting mark on social care – Oonagh Smyth CBE, CEO of Skills for Care and Dr Tanya Moore MBE, Principal Social Worker in Essex – both recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours.
Oonagh Smyth is someone who truly lives and breathes social care. For decades, she has championed workforce development, co-production, and making a real difference in people’s lives. I’ve had the privilege of knowing her personally for many years and can honestly say that her gentle, kind, and unwavering commitment to giving everyone a voice is inspiring.
Seeing her honoured in this way is not just a personal delight; it’s a recognition from peers and people with lived experience of how critical her voice has been in advocating for social care over the years. Oonagh has often emphasised that social care isn’t just a job, it’s about making sure every person is heard, valued, and supported.
Tanya Moore is, quite simply, social work through and through. As Principal Social Worker in Essex, her professional expertise is matched only by her dedication to justice and equality. Tanya has tirelessly worked on anti-racism initiatives for many years, always ensuring that social work practice is inclusive, reflective, and rooted in lived experience.
I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Tanya and calling her someone I can turn to for advice, guidance, and support. Her leadership is raw, authentic, and transformative, and her kindness and generosity make her a joy to work with. Tanya has this incredible ability to challenge systems while never losing sight of the people they exist to serve. Tanya’s view of leadership goes beyond titles or accolades; she believes in lifting others, listening, and making sure everyone has a place at the table.
Both Oonagh and Tanya represent the very best of social care – people who care deeply, act boldly, and inspire everyone around them to do better.
