I collaborate with clients to deliver communications projects that cover storytelling, content strategy, and everything in between. My focus is on amplifying the great work that my clients are doing, and turning it into practical resources and accessible stories that people can use to improve lives. My approach starts with integrity, empathy, and clarity. I believe how we talk about care and support should honestly reflect people’s lives, showing both what it means to live well and when things need to change. When I’m not working, you’ll find me running along the beach or lost in a good book.

With a background in branding and graphic design, I’ve spent the last fifteen years working with non-profits and purpose-driven organisations to turn complex ideas into clear, engaging communications, through my business HopeWorks. Projects range from rebranding to print design, websites to social media; and I have worked for organisations including Alzheimer’s Society, Wellbeing Teams, Family for Every Child, UNICEF and Helen Sanderson Associates. Originally from Yorkshire, I now live in Madrid and spend my free time travelling, hiking, going to the gym, reading, and going out dancing.

I work in the innovation and social research space across multiple sectors – from Health, the Arts, and Social Care through to Maternity and Women’s Health. This always includes a strong focus on building meaningful and authentic relationships with stakeholders and working in a collaborative and co-creative way. I am Co-Vice Chair of the Women’s Network at the RCOG and previously Chaired the Maternity Voices Partnership at the Royal Free London Hospital Trust for five years. I have recently discovered the joy of surfing and love spending time with my family, friends and exploring new places.

I’ve been working in and with local authorities in adult social care information, communications and practice development roles since 2006. I started my Rewriting Social Care blog in 2019 to share my thoughts about why language matters, the words and phrases that make me go ‘hmmm’, and the role of language in rewriting social care. All my current work involves challenging and changing language and practice in social work and social care. I also enjoy spending time with my family, walks and coffee with friends, cooking colourful food, swimming, and blue sky and sunshine.

I have authored a wide range of impactful reports including the recent ADASS ‘Time to Act Roadmap’, the Campaign to End Loneliness’ ‘Promising Approaches Revisited: Effective action on loneliness in later life’, and the final report of the Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness which led to the development of the Government’s loneliness strategy. My previous in-house roles include Director of the Campaign to End Loneliness and of the International Longevity Centre, and Head of Public Affairs at Help the Aged.

I am a social care leader and co-founder of When I Get Old, a movement advocating for greater choice and control in later life. With over 35 years’ experience, I began as a nurse for people with learning disabilities and became known for championing rights-based support. I am passionate about empowering citizens and communities, fostering local enterprise, and finding creative, inclusive approaches to care. I aim to maintain an energetic, optimistic outlook; and enjoy travel, food, growing vegetables and friend and family time.

I’m an experienced research and evaluation consultant with a background in health and social care and a strong focus on inclusion, personalisation and community-led approaches. For me, evaluation is about story telling; understanding the difference something has made, what’s worked, what hasn’t, and why. I’ve supported a wide range of clients including the Department of Health and Social Care, NHS England, British Red Cross, Macmillan Cancer Support and the Ramblers and I am passionate about centring lived experience in all that I do. In my spare time I like spending time with family and friends and Bolton Wanderers Football Club.
